Invisalign® vs. Braces in Greensboro, NC

Invisalign® and traditional, metal braces continue to be the most common orthodontic treatments, to date. If you want straighter teeth, it’s likely you’ve considered both options. Here, we will discuss how the experience for each treatment compares to the other at Straight A Orthodontics. Serving residents of Greensboro, NC and the greater Guilford County area, we offer these effective orthodontic treatments to surrounding communities.

The Basics: Braces vs. Invisalign®

First, let’s look at each orthodontic method. Braces use metal or ceramic brackets affixed to the teeth with wires which connect them. At regular appointments, the orthodontist will adjust the wire to continue to encourage the desired shifting of the teeth. Once the teeth are in the correct position and show stability, the brackets and wires are removed.

Invisalign® uses a series of custom-made, plastic aligners. These aligners mold to the teeth and are clear for maximum subtlety throughout treatment. Using controlled force, each aligner in your series will continue to encourage movement in the teeth until they are fully shifted into their desired position. These aligners are removable and should always be removed during dental hygiene practice and eating.

Which One Works Better? Braces or Invisalign®?

These two cosmetic dentistry procedures both aim to straighten teeth. Both Invisalign® and braces are effective at treating common instances of the following:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Overlapping teeth
  • Crowding in the mouth
  • Problems speaking or eating caused by the teeth and jaw
  • Spacing or gaps in the teeth
  • Asymmetric smiles

Advantages and Disadvantages to Braces and Invisalign®

To best understand some of the key differences between the treatments, let’s look at various factors you may be considering and how each method stacks up:

Convenience:

  • Braces: Require regular appointments, every 6-8 weeks for adjustments at the orthodontist. Additional visits may be required for broken brackets.
  • Invisalign®: You change the aligner at home every two weeks. Short follow-up visits in our office are needed every 8-12 weeks.

Comfort:

  • Braces: There is an adjustment period to get used to the metal and brackets in the mouth. A lisp may be apparent at first, and some discomfort or scratching is possible. Certain food and drink should be avoided for the duration of treatment.
  • Invisalign®: Very little adjustment needed. The aligners are removed during mealtime, so no dietary restrictions are necessary. A minor lisp may be temporarily present at the beginning of treatment.

Longevity:

  • Braces: A removable or fixed retainer will be recommended, based on your needs.
  • Invisalign®: A removable or fixed aligner will be recommended, based on your needs.

Appearance:

  • Braces: The brackets and wire are attached and will be visible unless you choose to get lingual braces.
  • Invisalign®: This treatment is removable and virtually invisible.

Limitations:

  • Braces: Metal braces can make dental hygiene difficult. Fixed brackets and wires make brushing and flossing on a regular basis more challenging. There are also limitations on the types of foods you can eat while wearing braces.
  • Invisalign®: Invisalign® is not recommended for individuals who may not be disciplined enough to wear the retainers all day long, every day.
